There are so many reasons why you should know how to cleanse your space. You have company over for a dinner party, you had a bad day at work and brought the stress home, or maybe you’ve been having bad dreams. Energy is attached to everything, including your home and that energy can shift when it is disrupted. Knowing how to cleanse your space will make you feel lighter and your home feel happier.
Smoke Cleansing vs. Smudging
It is important to understand the difference between smoke cleansing and smudging. Smudging is a Native American practice and is passed down through generations. I will not go into great detail about smudging as I am not a part of the culture and do not want to give out any information on the topic that might not be factual. If you are not Native American it is considered cultural appropriation to “smudge” your space. Simply call it “smoke cleansing”.
What To Use To Cleanse Your Space
There are many different items and herbs you can use to cleanse your space. The most popular herb used is sage. You can purchase this from any New Age shop in your area and there are many great resources online. I suggest looking on Etsy to support small businesses! Be aware of herbs that may be harmful to burn or are endangered in your area. Always do research before burning anything in your home.
Although burning herbs might be the most common way to cleanse a space, their are many other methods that can be used. You can use incense, essential oils, or even just meditation. Researching the metaphysical properties of the incense or essential oils can be helpful when you are wanting to bring a specific energy to the room. For instance, if you are feeling a lot of stress and anxiety in your space so you maybe want to use Lavender. Lavender brings calmness and serenity.
When To Cleanse Your Space
The best time to cleanse your space is when you are feeling centered. It is always a good idea to clear your mind before you begin to cleanse your space. A good way to do this is through meditation. Having a calm demeanor is crucial for an effective energy cleanse. If you are experiencing a lot of stress or other negative feelings wait until you are feeling calm to cleanse your space. I personally like to cleanse my space when I am alone as it is easy to control my energy. When there are other people around they might bring energy into the room that you don’t want.
Cleansing with Smoke
My favorite way to cleanse my space is with smoke. The smoke can come from a dried bundle of sage (or other herbs), incense, or wood sticks such as palo santo. Open the windows of the room you are cleansing so that the negative energy can exit the space. Walk around the room with the item that you are using and wave it in a circular clockwise motion. Visuale the negative energy being pushed out of the rom and replaced with positive energy. You can also use chants and spells as your wave the smoke around the room.
Cleansing with Meditation
For me, meditating in a clean and tidy environment is best to help me clear my mind. I recommend tidying up your space before cleansing your room. Taking a chair or pillow, set it up in the middle of the room, something that you will be comfortable sitting on for a while. I like to put on some quiet music (I search for spa or meditation music on Spotify).
Focus on your breathing and clear your mind. Imagine that you can see all of the negative energy in the room. It is helpful to visualize the negative energy as a physical manifestation so you can expel it from the space. I imagine the energy to be a dark cloud. With every deep inhale imagine you are being filled with bright white energy, as you exhale, imagine that white light is filling the space and replacing all of the negative energy. Do this for as long as it takes to replace all of the negative energy with the new energy you’ve created.
Cleansing With Essential Oils
If you have an oil diffuser you can use your favorite essential oils to cleanse your space and it will make your space smell wonderful. Another way to use essential oils is to put a few drops with some water in a spray bottle and spray around the room. Always be sure to not put pure essential oils onto your skin as it could be irritating.
